Need Ball Valves for Drinking Water Projects What to Check About WRAS Approval Before Ordering
2026-08-21

WRAS Approval Is Not Just a Catalogue Label

For drinking water projects in the UK, a ball valve should not be treated as suitable just because it looks like a standard plumbing or industrial valve. Any fitting in contact with potable water needs to meet the relevant water fittings regulations, and WRAS approval is one recognised route buyers use to verify that compliance.

WRAS approval is especially important for ball valves because the water touches several internal parts: the body, ball, stem, seats, seals, O-rings, plating, and sometimes thread seal areas. If one wetted material is not approved for drinking water contact, the valve may not be acceptable for the project even if the valve body material looks correct.

Check the Exact WRAS Approval, Not Only the Brand

A WRAS logo in a brochure is not enough. Before ordering, ask for the 7-digit WRAS approval number and verify it in the official WRAS Approvals Directory. The listing should match the product range being quoted, not just the manufacturer name.

Pay attention to these details:

● Approval holder

● Product model or series

● Size range

● Material description

● Temperature limit

● Conditions of use

● Expiry date

● Whether it is a product approval or material approval

This matters because WRAS approval is not automatically transferable to every valve from the same supplier. A brass ball valve, stainless steel ball valve, full-bore ball valve, and nickel-plated valve may have different approval coverage.

Product Approval vs Material Approval

Buyers should also understand the difference between product and material approval. A material approval may show that a material is suitable for contact with drinking water, but it does not always mean the complete valve assembly is approved as a finished water fitting.

For a drinking water ball valve order, the safest approach is to request confirmation that the complete valve assembly is approved for the intended use. If only certain materials are approved, ask whether the finished valve requires additional testing or project acceptance.

Match WRAS Approval to the Actual Project Conditions

A WRAS-approved ball valve still has operating limits. The approval listing may include temperature restrictions or installation conditions. For example, some approved materials or fittings are listed for use only up to a stated water temperature.

Before placing an order, compare the approval with the project specification:

● Cold water or hot water service

● Maximum working temperature

● Pressure rating

● End connection

● Valve size

● Flow direction or installation position if relevant

● Potable water contact materials

Do not assume that a valve approved for one drinking water condition is suitable for every potable water system.

What to Ask in the RFQ

A clear RFQ should ask for the WRAS approval number, approval certificate or listing reference, product datasheet, wetted material list, pressure-temperature rating, test report, and installation instructions.

For ball valves, also confirm the seat and seal materials. PTFE seats are common, but O-rings, stem seals, and plating can also affect drinking water suitability. If the project has additional requirements, such as lead-free compliance, low-lead brass, stainless steel construction, or specific national approvals outside the UK, list them separately.

FAQ

Does WRAS approval mean the valve is automatically suitable for all drinking water systems?

No. The approval must match the exact valve model, size range, materials, temperature limit, and intended installation.

Is WRAS approval the same as material approval?

Not always. A material may be approved for water contact, but the complete valve assembly may still need separate product approval.

Where should buyers verify WRAS approval?

Use the official WRAS Approvals Directory and check the approval number, product details, and expiry date.

RFQ Note for Drinking Water Ball Valves

When requesting a quote, include the medium, temperature, pressure rating, size, connection type, body material, seat and seal materials, WRAS approval requirement, and any project-specific documentation needed for approval review.
